BORIS JOHNSON has not ruled out a foreign holiday, according to Downing Street just before the Parliamentary recess.

Perhaps he should take a leaf out of WE Gladstone’s book as the D&S reported 150 years ago that the Prime Minister and his family were to spend the latter half of August staycating in Whitby.

“Mr Gladstone needs rest and quietude,” said the D&S.

One of the reasons for Mr Gladstone's holiday in Whitby was that his son, William Henry Gladstone, was the town’s MP whose great claim to fame was that only a year earlier, he had played in the first unofficial international football match between England and Scotland, representing Scotland.

The D&S urged the people of Whitby to cut the PM some slack. “They will, we feel sure, abstain from anything likely to interfere with the privacy and enjoyment of the holiday which he so much needs, and which he has so well earned,” the D&S said.
