KARL Robinson was left with a very unfamiliar combination of feelings on Saturday – joy at the result but frustration with the performance.

Oxford United have played far better than they managed in the 1-0 win at Coventry City and lost this season.

Robinson warned the performance level would land them in trouble if it was replicated during the run-in, but was happy to take the result regardless.

The head coach said: “The most important thing is we’ve got three points and not played well. I’ve not seen that, it’s more of a shock we’ve won away playing really badly.

“Keep playing like that and you won’t win.

“I’m not being critical, I just know there’s more. I’m over the moon inside and I’m happy because it’s another win.”

United’s match-winner was Curtis Nelson, who converted Cameron Brannagan’s corner in the second half.

The centre back’s contribution at the other end has been of more significance to Robinson, with the defence conceding just twice in the last six games.

Nelson lost the captain’s armband earlier this season over a lack of progress with talks about a new contract, with the existing deal expiring at the end of the season.

With no resolution it looks likely the 25-year-old will leave this summer, but Robinson feels the time to really plan will only come once they are safe from relegation.

“They are scenarios we can worry about once we get the number (of points) we feel is adequate to retain our status in this league,” he said.

“Curtis has been magnificent over the last five games.

“People wonder why I get quite cross with him for some of his performances, but what he’s done over the last five games is something I know he’s been capable of.”
