Bishop Auckland manager Ian Chandler was furious with his team’s defending after they were beaten 3-2 at home by Hemsworth in the first round of the Buildbase FA Vase on Saturday.

Bishops were optimistic of a good Vase run on the back of promising start to the season near the top end of the Northern League table, but their poor record in the competition continued courtesy of some defensive clangers.

Chandler said; “If you give teams three goals you're not going to win many games. I’m getting sick of players not listening and not doing as they are told. Changes are required now as some players are not learning. Hemsworth were well organised but we gifted them their three goals. It was a game we should have won.”

The Northern Counties East League side took the lead when Bishops keeper Nick Liversedge could only parry a shot and Nash Connolly scored from the rebound.

However, Bishops levelled with an Andrew Johnson penalty after Kyle Fryatt was brought down, but Johnson missed another penalty four minutes later for a handball offence on the line, for which the defender was only yellow carded.

That was forgotten when Bishops went 2-1 up through Chris Winn after Johnson’s shot was blocked, but Hemsworth equalised when Liversedge lost possession from a backpass, allowing Sean Ripley to score a simple equaliser.

There were chances for both sides in the second half, but it was the visitors who won the game when a mistake by Niall McGoldrick eventually ended with Ripley firing home the winner.

Shildon player-manager Danny Moore put his side into Monday’s draw with the only goal of the game against another NCEL side Glasshoughton.

Mattie Robson missed a penalty for Shildon in the second half, and Moore said; “We should have won more uncomfortably. Our keeper didn’t have a shot to save, and that’s two clean sheets in a row that I’m pleased about.”

Moore has now scored six goals in his last three matches since he moved up front, and he joked; “I think I’ve got a new lease of life, I feel like playing until I’m 40.”

Brandon’s adventure came to an end though at Barton Town, when they were heavily beaten 8-0.

There was almost a shock brewing at Billingham Town, who led Dunston UTS 1-0 at one stage before losing 3-1 to the Tynesiders, whose FA Cup tie against Gateshead this week will be shown on the BBC red button.

Hebburn had a great win against City of Liverpool by 4-0, with former Darlington striker Graeme Armstrong scoring one of the goals. James Fairley scored another from just inside the Liverpool half with the keeper out of his goal, while Paul Chow, who has scored the fastest ever Vase final goal, was also on the scoresheet.

Sunderland RCA beat one of the fancied NCEL teams, Bridlington by 3-2, after extra time.

Guisborough came back from 3-1 down to earn a 3-3 draw and a replay against Runcorn Town from the North West Counties League.

Bedlington sprang one of the region’s surprises, beating Whickham 5-1, but Seaham Red Star went out 4-0 at Vauxhall Motors.
