THE tie of the round in the Dales Cup was at Easby where in-form Richmond Mavericks met league leaders Richmond Town Academy last Saturday.

The hosts looked set for a sixth straight win when Gary Walker headed them into an early lead but Abdoulie Tunkara hit a brace either side of the break to keep Academy on course for a possible treble.

Elsewhere in the competition, Spennithorne and Harmby travelled to Hawes United and ran out 1-0 winners. It was an evenly contested tie that was well refereed by Ben Stones and it could have gone either way until Richard Lambert headed home a free-kick from Ian Clarkson 13 minutes from time.

Any hope of a Hawes comeback disappeared when they were reduced to ten men shortly afterwards and Spenni held on for a place in the last eight.

There were 36 goals in the other two ties with Colburn Town leading the way with an incredible 23-0 home win over Hawes B. Al Reid hit five, the pick of which was a chip from inside his own half, while Chris Dempster and Ashley McInerney both struck four each.

Gavin Armstrong hit a hat-trick, Stu Murray and Damian Hargreaves both scored a brace, while Pete Hughes, Steve Adams and Ricky Lannon completed the scoring.

Buck Inn Broncos were also in the goals with a 12-1 thrashing of Unicorn FC, where they had a record ten different scorers.

Shaun Charlton and Mark Sims both struck twice while the Platt brothers, Martin and Michael, David Andrews, Paul Haywood, Lloyd Tate, Phil Stirling, Anth Weighall and Barry Pybus were also on target.

Will Kipling scored the Unicorn consolation with an acrobatic overhead kick.

In the league, the game between Buck Inn Old Boys and Carperby Rovers was postponed, but Leyburn United moved up to fifth with an 8-2 thrashing of Askrigg United. The game was effectively over within quarter of an hour as goals from Glynn Barnard, Ritchie Weedall and Chris Greig put Leyburn in control while Greig and Charlie Aliss then made it 5-0 at the break.

Leyburn eased off a little in the second half, which allowed Askrigg to reply through Gary Cockerill and Tom Hammond, but Greig went on to add another two while Tom Osborn was also on target to complete a comfortable Leyburn victory.

The much-delayed North Riding Cup third round tie between Reeth and Amotherby and Swinton was finally played, although it had to be switched after the pitch at Reeth was frozen.

Despite the long trip to York, Reeth took the lead ten minutes into the second half through Joe Woodall but the hosts hit back five minutes later and then added three more in the closing stages to seal a rather flattering 4-1 victory and bring to an end the Wensleydale League’s involvement in the competition for another season.
