THERE was glorious weather on Sunday for Guisborough DMC Bobby Atkinson Memorial Trial, and Jack Howell from Staithes gained his first win since returning to the trials scene by beating Scarborough's James Carr by five marks.

Held along Westerdaleside, the three-lap, ten section course, flagged by Andy Metcalfe and helpers, brought out a clear winner in each class. The tricky first gave farmer, John Randles, a grandstand view while he gardened. "Good entertainment all day," he remarked.

The huge rock steps of eight needed full-blooded attacks to be successful. Both riders hit them hard. Howell dropped a mark on each. Carr matched him on the eighth but then a five on the ninth meant second place for the Scarborough man.

James' father Alan loves this type of trial but was just giving away too many years to the in-form Liam Smith who won Clubman A class with a solid ride of just five marks lost as Carr and third place man Jack Walker from Guisborough lost ground far out in the middle of the moor, each losing seven here.
