Ashington 1, Guisborough Town 6 (Ebac Northern League – First Division)

GUISBOROUGH Town produced a stunning display of attacking football at Ashington on Saturday, scoring six superb goals to avenge a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of the Northumberland side earlier in the season.

Recent new signing Cole Kiernan scored a brilliant hat-trick but the pick of the goals came via two stunners from substitute Sam Webster.

It took 24 minutes for Guisborough to open the scoring when James Rowe played a lovely ball through to Louis Johnson, who ran on to slot home for 1-0 to the Priorymen.

Within five minutes, Guisborough went 2-0 up following some high intensity pressing in the Ashington half. JJ Bartliff intercepted a weak pass and broke clear to square the ball to Cole Kiernan, who prodded the ball home.

After the break, Ashington were looking the more likely to score as they started with some real intensity of their own. But it just wasn’t to be their day and Cole Kiernan got his second and Guisborough's third in the 50th minute.

Just before the hour mark both teams were reduced to ten men as Ashington’s Paul Robinson received a straight red for a foul on Ben Jackson, but Guisborough’s Keelan Wright-Simpson got a second yellow for pushing Robinson after.

On 61 minutes, substitute Sam Webster scored with a wonderful curling effort from outside the box for 4-0 to the Priorymen.

Just four minutes after Webster’s wonder strike, Ashington won a penalty and Lewis Suddick converted to reduce the arrears to 4-1.

But in the Priorymen’s very next attack, they too were awarded a spot-kick and Kiernan slotted home to complete his hattrick.

Webster rounded off the scoring with a thumping effort from long range.

Guisborough manager Steve Bell said: “This was a brilliant day for the lads, and one that has definitely been coming. Ashington just couldn’t cope with our forwards, who were outstanding. The 6-1 scoreline didn’t flatter us one bit either.

"The dressing room is buzzing and a really good place to be at the moment and that’s down to the players, who I can’t praise enough."

The game featured a Northern League debut for promising young Guisborough player Charlie Wheeler, who has progressed through the club’s Reserve side.

On Saturday, Guisborough play Whitley Bay FC at the KGV Stadium, kick-off 3pm. The cup match against Marske United FC is now on Wednesday, March 30, at the KGV Stadium kick-off 7.45pm.
