PROMOTERS have closed the iconic racetrack at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough until further notice following a recent meeting which revealed a few issues Scarborough Borough Council has with the historic venue.

The news comes just a few weeks after the season-opening Spring Cup, which was set to be one of four road race events at the North Yorkshire circuit this season but this weekend’s Barry Sheene Classic and the Oliver’s Mount Festival at the end of next month have been cancelled.

A statement read: “Scarborough Borough Council have recently conducted detailed inspections of their entire estate, including Oliver’s Mount. Their surveyors have found several serious issues with many of the aged buildings at Oliver’s Mount that make it unsafe to hold meetings at the venue at the current time. The safety of the public, competitors, officials, and staff must always come first. Despite all possible efforts, it has become obvious that the meetings cannot be run in a safe manner with the buildings in their current state.”

The Michelin Steve Henshaw Gold Cup will move from September 11/12 to September 18/19 to allow more time for remedial work to be undertaken by Oliver’s Mount Racing, 243 Road Racing Association and the ACU, whereby the meeting is expected to go ahead on the revised date.
