MO DIAME is fed up of Newcastle United coming away with nothing from matches when there is a belief they haven’t got what they deserved.

And the Senegal international does not think it is right to make excuses when the Magpies suffer a defeat like the one that they had to endure against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The stoppage-time sucker punch Newcastle were hit with meant Matt Doherty’s match-winning header at the back post had sealed three points for Wolves.

After the game Rafa Benitez was furious with referee Mike Dean on two fronts, suggesting DeAndre Yedlin should not have been sent off with 33 minutes to go and also that Willy Boly should have been dismissed for an elbow on Ayoze Perez.

At that time Newcastle battled with ten men and had done reasonably well, until Jamaal Lascelles and Ki Sung-Yeung were the guilty parties late on when Diogo Jota was allowed to charge through before Doherty ended up securing the points.

Diame said: “It was a really bad result. We can say everything about how we fought, how we showed good attitude but we lost the points, especially at home, and that is disappointing.

“We had a good point against Everton last Wednesday and Wolves was a good opportunity for us with all the results from Saturday, now we are disappointed not to have done our bit to get the result we wanted.”

Newcastle now face Huddersfield and Fulham, two teams struggling in the relegation zone, in successive games before Christmas in fixtures that will be crucial for all three sides.

But Diame believes Newcastle, who had lost just one of their previous seven before the weekend, can only seriously think about collecting maximum points if they overcome their lapses in concentration that have proven costly so often earlier in the season.

He said: “Nothing really has changed in terms of the next two games after losing to Wolves, what we need is points and we still need those in the next two matches. We needed those whatever the result against Wolves.

“The attitude and desire we showed on Sunday, we have to keep that up, and hope we get more than a last-minute goal scored against us to lose.

“But even with ten men we have to be more concentrated than we were at the end because we conceded that goal and lost the game. It was not good enough from us.”

Benitez is likely to have calmed down since Sunday but he had every right to be calling for the introduction of VAR – the Video Assistant Refereeing due to be rolled into the Premier League next season – immediately after the Boly/Perez incident.

Perez took a blow to the head and whether it was deliberate or not, referee Mike Dean didn’t stop the game for the head injury and Wolves almost scored at the other end when Doherty’s effort was saved by Martin Dubravka.

Diame was not in the mood to say whether Dean was right or wrong, nor did he even want to focus on whether Yedlin should have been dismissed for his tug on Jota after he had lost possession.

He said: “When you lose there is always something to blame. I know a lot of people will say we have worked hard, gave a lot but not everything because we lost and we are left disappointed again.

“At home all the bottom teams we face we need to take the three points. When you play away it is different but we should be looking to beat teams in the bottom half when we are at home.

“It means another home defeat. I don’t know what to say about the run (seven home defeats from nine). It’s bad. We know that. We need points and we need to change that as soon as possible.

“What do you want me to say about the decisions? We lost.

“It’s difficult to be playing against a good team like Wolves with ten men and we don’t know whether a couple of the decisions were right for us, but we need to make sure we don’t lose even if we don’t win. Huddersfield is another final for us now.”

Newcastle are three points above the bottom three ahead of the trip to the Terriers.
