LEE CATTERMOLE and Duncan Watmore will return to Sunderland’s squad for tomorrow’s FA Cup second-round replay with Walsall.

Adam Matthews will miss the game after picking up a knock in Saturday’s abandoned game at Accrington Stanley, but Cattermole and Watmore will both feature.

Watmore is set to make his second start in the space of a week after also playing in last Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy win over Notts County.

Cattermole is set to make his first appearance for a month-and-a-half after completing his recovery from a foot injury.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross said: “Duncan will be back in the squad for the game. We always planned that. Even prior to the Checkatrade Trophy match, it was our intention to have him involved in that game, then miss the weekend, then be back involved for the Walsall game.

“He’s back in the squad for tomorrow as planned, and that opportunity to get back on the pitch again will be good for us.

“Lee will also be back in the squad, and that will be good for us. Lee’s form this season has been very good – we’ve spoken often enough about the contribution he’s made.”

Matthews will not be risked after he was substituted in the opening 20 minutes of Saturday’s game, but the full-back’s problem is not as serious as feared and he should be available for this weekend’s league game with Bristol Rovers.

Ross said: “Adam will be unavailable for tomorrow, but it’s not too bad – certainly better than we envisaged at the time when he came off. There is no point taking unnecessary risks with him though – there are a number of important league games that will come up after this cup replay.

“We’ve got concerns over another two or three players, and we’ll either make a late decision on them or if there’s any doubt whatsoever, we’ll just take them out.

“It’s nothing that would rule players out for a period, it’s more just some issues from Saturday and some ongoing issues that we need to manage as well.”

Tomorrow’s starting line-up is likely to be similar to the side that started last week’s Checkatrade win, but Ross insists he will continue to pay a great deal of respect to the FA Cup, with the winners of tomorrow’s game due to travel to Bolton Wanderers in the third round.

Ross said: “Like we have in all the cup competitions this season, we want to try to progress in the tournament. We’re conscious of the fixtures we’ve had, and the fixtures we’ve got coming up. That will reflect how we rotate our squad for the game.”
