Darlington & D.M.C. Trial, Underbanks, Sunday

The Darlington club dropped in on murky Underbanks on Sunday morning where Nigel Cummins plotted an eleven section trials course for a total of fifty one competitors.

It was an overcast day in Scott Trial country but all competitors completed the course. Richard Sadler won the expert class with a couple of marks in section six. His father Paul had no easy ride and shared the top spot in the Clubman ranks with Guy Chapman. Both got through a total of thirty three section on three dabs. Oil rig engineer Joe Alderson was right on them but a stop in section six on the third lap cost Joe the top spot. Gamekeeper Marcus Irwin was only two marks behind Alderson in the final count. Another couple of outings on his new Beta and Marcus will be right onto his rivals. While daughter Amber was jousting with the lads in Youth B her father Leslie was topping the Over 40's. The youngster on the easy route certainly shaded some of the adults in the category. The Darlington club thank the Bainbridge of Marrick Abbey for allowing the trial to take place at Underbanks End.

Wetherby & D.M.C. Annual Presidents Shield Trial, Kingstone Farm, Fellbeck, Sunday

BRITISH and European Youth trials champion Harry Hemingway turned on the style at the annual Presidents Shield Trial on Sunday at Fellbeck where the Wetherby Motor Club staged the event under threatening clouds. The weather held off for forty eight competitors and ten hardy observers.

The format was four laps and ten sections for all competitors but with a hard and easy course option planned by Richard Shepherd. Twelve year Harry Hemingway rode through the sections for just two penalties and that won the East Keswick schoolboy the coveted McRae Tray Trophy. His score was just single point under Huddersfield adult winner Chris Greenwood who lost his three penalties on the rocky third section. George Hemingway was on the same score as Greenwood in the third and stopped on lap one then got off line in the fifth which climbed the shallow stream and added another maximum. Of course there is always someone lurking to do one better and John Maxfield did just that, a clean sheet ride for the Grassington motor engineer on his smoky BSA Bantam, leaving Richard Crabtree to claim runner-up from Nick Eagleton on a farthest clean tie-breaker.
