RAFAEL BENITEZ has hit back at fellow Spaniard Bruno ahead of Newcastle United’s crucial weekend game with Brighton.

The Brighton captain attempted to ratchet up the pressure ahead of his side’s trip to St James’ Park tomorrow by claiming that Newcastle’s supporters will turn on their team if things do not go the Magpies’ way in the early stages of the game.

Benitez is aware of Bruno’s comments, and is confident his side’s supporters will make the defender eat his own words when the action begins tomorrow.

Benitez said: “The fans have something to prove, that Bruno is wrong. Bruno was saying the fans will get on top of the players, but one of our big strengths is our fans behind the team.

“If they see something wrong, they will still be supporting the team. The relationship between the players and the fans is strong.

“The fans realise the players will need support. If we are united like we have been for years, we can do well. Hopefully, the fans will give us confidence for the rest of the season.”

Salomon Rondon has returned to light training, but will not be considered for tomorrow’s game as he completes his recovery from a thigh complaint. Similarly, Ciaran Clark will miss out, having suffered a muscular problem while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

Paul Dummett missed Wales’ two internationals, but the full-back has been training all week and will return to tomorrow’s starting line-up at left-back.

Benitez said: “Rondon has been doing part of the training session, but is still not available. Clark has had some treatment for a muscle problem, he is not available. Dummett has been training normally and is available to play.”
