RICHMOND Town will take on the winner of the tie between Annfield Plain and Gateshead Leam Rangers at Earls Orchard in the second round of The Monkwearmouth Cup after their 4-2 win against Wheatley Hill Working Mens Club.

The visitors came to North Yorkshire as under dogs, arriving only twenty five minutes before kick off, and with less than two minutes played found themselves a goal behind. Jason Newall unmarked in the penalty box side footing home Ryan Booth's corner kick. It was looking like being a comfortable afternoon for Richmond as they dominated the opening exchanges, but that all changed in the twelfth minute when from Wheatley Hill's first attack,a penalty was bizarrely awarded when Lee Westgarth tripped over his own feet. Lee Smith converting to level the score. Richmond were back in front after twenty one minutes through Ben Darville who beat the offside trap, making no mistake from inside the box. The first half ended on a sour note when a nasty looking tackle saw Tom Carniege-Brown needing to be replaced and in the coming together of the two sides that followed the visitors were reduced to ten men, the referee and his assistants after a lengthy chat however sent the wrong man off, and issued three yellow cards, one to Richmond's man of the match Dan Deeney who was stood at the other side of the pitch throughout the incident.

Richmond scored their third of the afternoon six minutes into the second period after Booth controlled the ball superbly, turned and played a well weighted ball for Darville who was denied by the legs of Weatley Hill keeper Kieron Laws who was then helpless as Adam Walker was on hand to fire home the rebound. Frustratingly Town allowed their opponents back into the game once more after seventy three minutes. Smith again the scorer when he headed home unmarked from six yards. The amount of goals Richmond are conceding from corner kicks this season must be of some concern to manager Jonathan Kellett. Five minutes later Smith had a glorious chance to complete his hat trick and level the scores once more but he blazed his second penalty kick of the day high and wide of Mark Walkers goal. A worse penalty you’ll struggle to see for the remainder of this season. Any nerves were eased with seven minutes left to play, Darville scoring his second after rounding the keeper to slot home for a deserved victory albeit having made much harder work of it than they should have.
