WET was the order of the day for the James Herriot Trail Race at the weekend, with the race treated as a fell race in the club championship because of its hilly terrain and uneven, stoney surfave over most of its course. Certainly it was hilly, the race beginning with a one and a half mile uphill toil! Most people would probably prefer wet to the intense heat of the past few weeks for this race, and Tom Levi certainly relished it, finishing an excellent 6th in 60.41, with Mike Lowther coming next, 43rd in 70.31 and Rob Burn 51st and 2nd M60 in 71.22.

Martyn Coy, going well just now, came 75th in 74.58, Lorraine Hiles, always outstanding, 82nd and 1st F50 in 75.37, Paul Atkinson 85th in 75.58, Andy Butcher 89th in 76.31, Alan Simpson 94th in 77.24, just ahead of Marc Davies 96th in 77.35, Kirsty Naylor 106th in 79.35, David Tervit 141st in 84.19, Geoff Bullock 171st in 89.37, Heather Bell 179th in 91.15, Faith Coy 194th in 93.40, Alison Butcher 205th in 96.47, Christine Burn 223rd in 105.42, Ian Codling 235th in 135.28 and Marian Codling, bringing up the rear, 236th in 142.38. Prizes were presented by Jim Wight, son of James Herriot, who also started the race, and Peter Wright, Yorkshire Vet, with Rob Burn, Lorraine Hiles and Marian Codling all getting age-group prizes. The film crew were in attendance for a future Yorkshire Vet programme.

By contrast, temperatures for the Inclined to Madness Fell Race during the week, Race 6 in the summer series, were unusually high, and ith hard ground and no bog, most people getting quicker times by 3 or 4 minutes than in previous years! Still plenty of inclines, though. Tom Levi, in a real purple patch, was 1st club finisher here, 20th out of

121 in 54.29, David Fawkes 34th in 56.38, Josh Cooper 53rd in 58.26, Lorraine Hiles once again in the prizes, 70th in 64.13 and 1st F50, Alan Simpson 78th in 66.26, Marc Davies 79th in 66.35, Helen Ashworth 105th in 75.03 and Faith Coy 112th in 78.37.

Note, Tom, Lorraine and Alan did both of these races with just a few days rest in between. Congratulations!

The weekend Park Runs were a piece of cake compared with the two races reported above! At Fountains Abbey, with 365 finishers, Ian Crane came 128th in 25.34, Rosie Gatenby 149th in 26.44, Paul Adams 215th in 29.21, Linda Bamforth 237th in 30.20 and Gillian Crane 260th in 31.42.

Phillip Craig at Northallerton was 50th out of 75 in 30.33 and at Bedworth, Alan Pollock came 23rd out of 133 in PB 23.33.
