Richmond Motor Club, Kidstones Trial

ALMOST a quarter of a century has elapsed since the Bradford Motor Club staged in a youth championship trial at the hamlet Kidstones at the top of Bishopdale in north west Yorkshire but the bleak Kidstones Scar again featured in trials action thanks to the endeavours of Richmond Motor Club last Sunday.

Not quite a championship event but some big names in trialling competed on a fine three lap twelve section course devised by Darren Fowler and Paul Mugridge. Their sons Callum and Harry also had a hand in the intensive labour. The venue abounds with narrow gullies usually with a shallow stream trickling down the gradients. Two openers were just above the parking area featuring slippery rocks and at two a fallen tree added spice.

Sections three two seven were all climbing gullies, some wet, some dry. The eighth visited the pumping station adjacent to the lake where a noted photographer cast away a Nikon flash gun by accident. That waterfall section tested all. The finale was a hill climb which some cleaned, like Stuart Blythe, and others did not. In the expert class Richard Sadler and Guy Kendrew renewed their weekly joust. Sadler fired the Acklam Beta up the tenth and eleventh sections for a mere seven penalties while Kendrew lost eighteen, John Crinson twenty three and James Stones one up on Crinson. Russ Rooksby pipped Inter winner Matt Maynard on the group. Ryan Brown and Guy Stones battled for the Youth honours which eventually went to the Bellerby teenager. Stuart Blythe was the star performer on the green course and really in charge of his new Beta four stroke beating Ilkley heating engineer Andy Tales and evergreen and capable Gary Pears. Andy Kearton topped the Clubman class from William Wood and Coverdale farmer Sam Lambert whose father Steve had given his lad the day off to compete. Sam probably had a herd of cows to milk or delivering lambs when he got home. Notable rides from Dan Thorpe on a Triumph Cub, Josh Brown winning Class B in his usual fiery style End.

Darlington & D.M.C.Bridge End Trial, Arkengarthdale, Sunday

THE Darlington A.M.C.A. club headed right into Scott Trial heartlands on Sunday for their April trial. Bridge End was the starting point for sixty four competitors and the road became a mile long car park. Being in Scott country the two openers dived straight into the stream that identifies the Bridge End title. Nigel Cummings was Clerk of the Course assisted by Trevor Willans and Neil Mackenzie. They had plotted a twelve section event to be ridden three lap route which was shrouded in dense fog. The ride across the moor headed north east and the steep grass and heather bank half a mile from start area provided an appetiser. After that climb the full extent of Booze Moor tested the competitors. The trial ran clockwise tracking the Mintex youth event of recent years. In terms of hot news further development has been carried out on Gary Pear's vintage Scorpa, which has been treated to a brand new piston and some surgery to the cylinder. It now sounds different.

The over forties, or was it the nearly fifties, were on a Scottish Six Days Trial training exercise. Forty eight year old slim line Stuart Blythe was getting to grips with his new Beta four stroke Beta while his riding pal Paul Dennis was working wonders with the power of his Triumph Cub who will ride the Pre-65 trial at KInlochleven in three weeks. Mick Grant had a long journey from his Louth home as he spent the Saturday night over at Yrjo Vesterinen's home near Burnley before coming up the M6 motorway to the fogbound event.
