NORTHALLERTON’s seconds moved three points clear at the top of Yorkshire’s division five (north) at the weekend after two wins in two days.

On Saturday, the side took on Ben Rhydding fifths and went 1-0 up mid-way through the first half following a powerful penalty corner strike from Abby Robinson. Northallerton kept up the pressure in the second period, and their efforts paid off when Anna Welch’s pass was swept into the goal by Kayleigh Stewart.

The player of the match award was shared by Stewart and Jess Thurlow.

On Sunday, a rearranged game saw a 3-0 win over Leeds fifths. Northallerton took the game to Leeds from the first whistle, but did not make a breakthrough until early in the second hall when Megan Bell and Brooke Hodgson scored in quick succession.

Kayleigh Stewart finished off a superb passing move when she slotted in five minutes from time.

Captain Sandra Horner said: “Saturday’s game was our first since the end of November due to frost and the Christmas break, so the team did really well to come out and win both games.”

Northallerton’s firsts lost 2-1 away to Kingston-upon-Hull seconds on Saturday. They went ahead when Hannah Chapman converted Sarah MacDonald’s pass from a free-hit, but their lead was short-lived when a Hull shot deflected in off a Northallerton stick.

Hull changed their formation in the second period, and scored an early which was enough to take all three points. Player of the match was Lois Farndale.

On Sunday, the side beat second-placed Driffield seconds 4-0 at home with strikes from Isabelle Meeks and Becky Carson, and penalty corner goals from Jo Robinson and Sarah MacDonald. The player of the match award was shared by Carson and Brooke Hodgson.
