Richmond Motor Club, Hardstyles Trial, Marske, Sunday

JUST seven days after running another spectacular Scott Trial the Richmond club changed down a gear on Sunday and put on another good trial for the lesser talented members at Hardstiles, not a million miles from Orgate Falls where one hundred competitors, of all ages and sizes enjoyed an easy trial, very easy, with low scores in all eight main course classes.

Small Wheels guru Ted Harston returned the fray after his summer break to control seventeen young contenders who rode a separate nine section course three times so the boys, and parents, had almost a full length adult trial on the grassy banks. Ted plotted three groups of three sections to give the parents some brisk walking in the bitterly cold conditions. The second group ws sheltered by trees and thirds in the farm yard area. Landowner Gerald Horn, from Marske, permitted Clerk of Course Nick Hunt to plot a testing three lap twelve section course on his land and the experience showed through even on ground that had been under heavy rain for many weeks. The opener was near the small wheels action and then a grassy climb with tufts to deviate wheels was the feature of the second section. Sections from three to four navigated the shallow and narrow stream then a ride under a fallen tree. From six to twelve two gullies tested the main field. Two names that have past previous skills were Jeffrey Teward and John Horn, Gerald Horrn's nephew. Both were handy on a trials bike and twelfth anbds tenth results showed they are still a force to be reckoned with. Braidley's Sam Lambert also managed to take a break from Hull University to snatch overall third place on the main course winner Simon Williamson and Tom Peacock. Stewart Molly rode the entire course for one penalty, two better that Ripon's Paul Mugridge and Martin Pratt.

Bradford & D.M.C, John Metcalfe Trophy Trial, Cowling Cragg, Sunday

THE John Metcalfe Memorial Trial at Cowling Cragg was an arctic test for ninety seven trials riders on Sunday. Quite amazing though was the response from competitors, who travelled from Buxton, Manchester, Sheffield and Barnsley. Also on the travelling list were Ryan Brown, from Bellerby and Leyburn's Robert Weatherill. The two youngsters won their respective classes on the tough hard course route .

Pickering & D.M.C. Motocross, Haygate Lane, Wrelton, Sunday

THE Pickering club turned on the style with the first of three motocross meetings producing an end of season speed bonanza at the popular Haygate Lane track at Wrelton on Sunday. The grand finale will be a double date in November -weather permitting so make a note of November 5th and 19th. The first autumn meeting gated a total of ninety nine starters with seventy adults riding the main plus a further fifteen in the twin shock a veteran classes. Add in fourteen youths split into a Class A and B four race programme. The programme late started due to late entries, form filling, class sorting etc. It all took precious time and the forecasted stormed did not materialise. The track was on the greasy side of being slippery and quite a few parted with their machines. Goxhill Suzuki rider Jimmy Margetson seemed up a gear up on the field in the Group 1 races having opened his account by winning the 12 lap Grove House Trophy final from Barrow Haven's Ben James and Norton's Jake Biggs.

Margetson missed a Group 1 hat-trick in the second moto which went to James with Biggs tracking him to the flag. Group 2 was the Mark Angus -Steven Sobey show with Kendall's Paul Bethell splitting the two front runners in the first moto. Coxwold enduro/motocrosser Ben Reinberg applied the pressure in the Group 3 events where East Yorks Centre stalwarts Mark Franklin and Richard Cooper ruled along with Martin Bean. Richard Collins disposed of all the Twin Shock contenders with his trusty Honda and then rubbed salt in the wound by winning the five lap Veteran race. The fourteen children were split into Classes A and B where Ben Croft, Joe Cooper and Sam Jackson topped the Class A scoreline. Dave Almond and Tommy Downs shared the races in Class B. all the youngster managed to get on terms with a course and its treacherous surfaces.
