WHILE it is good that many people are electing to cycle rather than drive, those cycling in the countryside seem unaware of the law governing where they can lawfully ride, so here’s a reminder.

Cycling is permitted on bridleways, waymarked blue arrow on yellow background, though you must give way to pedestrians and horses.

Cycling is not permitted on footpaths, signposted as such and waymarked yellow arrow on green background.

Please note many farm tracks are not public rights of way at all.

The law restricting cycling limits damage to farmland and natural habitats and also protects pedestrians.

There is no right of way for cyclists linking Low and High Coniscliffe yet walkers are routinely forced off the footpath or even ridden into by hordes of youths, racing mountain bikers and meandering families. This is unacceptable.

Our countryside is precious and should be enjoyed with respect. It is not a bike playground.
