Sir, – Godfrey Bloom (D&S, Sept 3) is wrong, again.

Speed cameras most definitely work. I notice that, like myself, countless others, certainly well over 90 per cent, stick to the limits imposed in average speed check areas (an excellent example is the 13 miles of road works on the A1 running south from Leeming Bar).

Given the well-proven link between speed and accidents, specifically deaths and severe injuries, this has to be welcomed.

More extensive use of disguised cameras would definitely lead to a reduction in deaths etc. Why ask the police to undertake the duty of logging speedsters or flagging or chasing them down, given the time it takes, when cameras can do the job quite efficiently on major roads and in a fraction of the time.
