Sir, – I totally agree with your correspondent V Walker (D&S letters, Sept 3). Just who is responsible at North Yorkshire County Council for this sign madness?
Having obliterated the county’s roads with superfluous signs indicating a slippery road surface (what do you expect on a country road in an agricultural community?), it now seems hell-bent on doing the same thing with another sign with a completely futile piece of information i.e. “No footway for 500 yards” (or whatever the distance may be).
We have had one of these on the A684 at the exit of West Witton for a couple of years, and yesterday I noticed one at the entrance to Carlton in Coverdale (pictured above).
We and our predecessors have managed to see for ourselves that there is no footway for hundreds of years, (let alone 500 yards!).
What has changed that we now need to be told with an expensive sign to the detriment of the countryside. The only people who can’t see there is no footway are the blind, and they can’t see the sign anyway. Do the people responsible for this nonsense think we are as dim as them?
I would be delighted if the person responsible at the county council can give me an explanation or justification for this waste of public money.
PAUL WIGNALL West Witton.
