Sir, – The new owner of the Traveller’s Rest in Skeeby, Mr Whitfield, was quoted in your paper as stating that it is not possible for the pub to generate a turnover of £4,000 per week and he is quite correct.
As has already been demonstrated by the research conducted by the directors of Hudswell Community Pub, a pub the size of the Traveller’s Rest should be able to survive quite easily on a turnover of well under half of what Mr Whitfield predicts; that is, if the tenant didn’t have to find the money to pay an extortionate rent before he could make a profit for himself.
RON and PAT KASSELL Darlington Road Richmond.
