Sir, – Lately, I have been speaking to some of the residents who left their homes in Lyle Close, Richmond. Almost all of them have told me that they would like to return, as soon as possible to their former homes.

This is the reason I am opposed to planning permission being granted for the demolition of the buildings. They could be used for other purposes, for instance the police are looking for somewhere to house the victims of rape, and one of the blocks could be reserved for newlyweds who require a first home. Or soldiers returning from the Middle East wars who might find it difficult returning to live with their parents. There is also the problem of the single men from the Gurkha regiment who might want to settle in the area.

Now, what to do about providing a site for the extra-care apartments which I know are necessary? Well if you go up Victoria Road, through the archway on the north side there is a large building bordered up. If this was demolished it could provide a site for some 18/20 apartments. This belongs to the local hospital trust and if they require a facility in the building it could be provided on the ground floor.

Another site which could be used is the grass paddock opposite the Methodist chapel in Queen’s Road.

There is also a large building site for sale in Reeth Road opposite the former convent development.

This is large enough to contain the whole block and also affordable housing, which I know the council is anxious to provide.
