Sir, – With reference to the letter (D&S, April 10), concerning the comparison of supermarkets such as Tesco and the Co-op, I would like to speak up for the Co-op in Bedale.

Two years ago I became virtually blind overnight. For getting on 20 years I had done the majority of my household shopping at Tesco, Northallerton, taking it home in my car as most people do. When I became unable to drive, I had to reorganise my life. I felt that I could get myself on the free buses (with excellent, helpful drivers) to and from Northallerton.

I could find all my usual provisions because I knew the store so well, so I asked the manager if I could collect my goods, usually about £50 worth per visit, and have someone deliver it for me.

We never got as far as discussing where it was to go, or how much it would cost me, because I was told that goods would only be delivered if they had been ordered online.

I pointed out that I could neither see to read or write, so, although I could have done so in the past, sadly for me, it was no longer possible. This was met with a shrug of the shoulders.

My son contacted head office, but the reply was still “online”, or we don’t want to know.

I pointed out that if I went to Northallerton as I had done for so long, I could walk down one side of the High Street, call in at Barkers and have coffee and a teacake and walk back on the other side, finishing up at Tesco.

This gave me the opportunity to be seen by some of my many friends I have in the area who were also shopping, and although I couldn’t see them, they would see me and come and speak.

We hear so much these days that the elderly should be encouraged to stay in their own homes, but when one lives alone, it is good to get out and have someone to talk to. One would expect the store whose motto is “every little helps” to be able to assist a customer of so many years standing to prove their sincerity, or maybe they should finish their motto with “…if it suits us!”

On the other hand, although it is a much smaller shop, I have found the Co-op in Bedale to be most considerate. One can go there any Thursday or Friday morning, collect all the shopping one needs, pay for it, and it will be delivered at lunchtime.

I had to learn my way around a shop I didn’t know at all, but with help from any assistant or other customer who happens to be nearby, I can do my shopping happily.

I know which “little help” I appreciate.

JEAN WILLIAMS Badger Hill Drive, Bedale.
