WITH regard to the debate about the identification of Austin A40 Devons (DST, Aug 28 and Sept 4), this is a picture of a four-door Devon, from about 1951, which I owned in 1965. I still have the receipt from the garage I bought it from in Leeds – it says “as seen, tried and approved, without warranty (of course) £20”. The green colour of the car is definitely non standard – there just happened to be a big can of green paint, and a big brush, in the garage, as the normal colour of grey was a bit dull!
The winter of 1965 was very snowy, so I put two big knobbly tyres on the back and the Devon ploughed its way through the snow with no problems – unlike the way most cars (can't) handle snow today.
The registration number of AJK 21 would be quite collectible now.
