Sir, – Written slightly tongue in cheek. I would like to suggest a solution to the problem of the Borough of Stockton being in two counties, for which there is a precedent.
When the County Borough of Teesside was set up in 1968 it was decided that it should be wholly within the North Riding of Yorkshire, presumably on the basis that its largest town, Middlesbrough, was in that county. Therefore the whole Borough of Stockton should be in County Durham, which is where the BBC regards it as being.
On a practical basis I fail to see any advantage in Yarm and Thornaby going it alone and I feel reasonably certain that the Boundary Commission would never agree to this.
