Sir, – Twice recently I have driven to York and been held up at the level crossing on Wigginton Road.
On both occasions the barrier came down, the train passed and the barrier rose again in a total time of 50 seconds.
In the light of this can anyone explain why the level crossings in Northallerton are closed at least two and often over three minutes before the train even arrives?
Quite apart from the unnecessary delays and traffic congestion, this is particularly concerning now that the government are threatening to fine drivers who leave their engine running while the vehicle is stationary.
PETER CARROTTE
Winton Road, Northallerton.
