Sir, – The residents of Thirsk have been asked for their comments on the newly drawn up proposals to replace the trees and benches in our Market Square.

The answer seems blindingly obvious. Why not replace the trees and benches as they were originally? It was a good layout that met with general approval and the circular benches are still on site.

It makes no sense for a council which is cutting services to then spend money on new benches when there are perfectly serviceable ones for free.

And please: a Market Square is no place for a fake wishing well which will attract more chip trays than charitable donations.

Why can't we have back that which was taken from us?
