Sir, – We are horrified to learn that Georgia Browns in Stockton wants to be renamed the Pound Pub.

The name Pound Pub creates the wrong image for the town. We also strongly oppose the sale of alcohol at 8am.

The council is endeavouring to improve the town with the full backing of local businesses.

We are supportive of innovative ideas, we want to see more quality pubs opening, but the renaming undermines the progress we have so far seen within the town.

Already we have seen the redevelopment of the High Street well under way, the worldclass Stockton Riverside Festival, Stockton’s Calling Event, Stockton Weekender, and the plans for the redevelopment of the Globe. More students and visitors are bringing new quality pubs, restaurants and shops.

The people of Stockton are passionate about the town, hence we are prepared to invest time and money. We want visitors to have a pleasant experience.

It’s all about attracting the right kind of business and another discounted retailer is not required.

We do not want to see the name Pound Pub appearing and certainly the sale of alcohol at 8am is not necessary. It sends out entirely the wrong message.

J TAYLOR Chairman, Stockton Pub Watch.
