Sir, – The residents of Bagby and Balk have started a campaign to make the speed limit in their village 20mph.

Like many, we’ve been sick of cars hurtling through the 30mph limit village.

Like many, when we’ve complained to the council/police, nothing has been done. Like many, we despaired thinking nothing can be done.

Until now. It was a revelation when we found out our elected county councillors are the people who decide on speed limits in their authority.

The default speed limit of 30mph was set in 1934 when there were 1.5 million cars on the road. Now there are 33 million. It’s time for a change.

It’s time for 20mph.

Why 20mph where people live?

Safety is the main reason. If a pedestrian is hit by a car at 30mph they have a 50 per cent chance of being killed. The same pedestrian hit by the same car travelling at 20mph will have a 97 per cent chance of survival.

Anyone else out there think 20’s plenty? Then start your own campaign.

JONATHAN TULLOCH Bagby, Thirsk.
