Sir – Your correspondent (D&S, Aug 30) has suggested a workable and economic solution for all UK rail lines.
But surely a simple review of the number of season ticket holders would give the facts for the requirement for this major project from Birmingham to London.
The Government seems determined to indulge in this flight of fancy regardless of whether there is a requirement or otherwise.
I am reliably informed that the 7.40am from Manchester to London was half empty last week. Just a sobering thought.
