England’s Lionesses failed to become world champions today as they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

Following the defeat, Prince William, Gary Lineker and Rishi Sunak were among those sending their commiserations to the England team.

The Prince of Wales wrote on his official social media accounts: “Although it’s the result none of us wanted, Lionesses you have done yourselves and this nation proud.

“Your spirit and drive have inspired so many people and paved the way for generations to come. Thank you for the footballing memories.

“Congratulations to Spain. W”

Gary Lineker said he is “gutted” for the Lionesses but he commended the winners for their performance.

He tweeted: “Gutted for the @lionesses who gave their all, but congratulations to Spain on winning the World Cup.

“They were the better team and thoroughly deserved their victory.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the nation is “incredibly proud” of the Lionesses.

He tweeted: “You left absolutely nothing out there @Lionesses.

“It wasn’t to be, but you’ve already secured your legacy as game changers.

“We are all incredibly proud of you.”

The Prince of Wales and Rishi Sunak’s messages come after they received backlash for not being in Australia to watch the match in person.

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said: “Congratulations to Spain. We are all proud of the Lionesses and the World Cup campaign they fought.

“They inspired millions across the country with glorious performances, moments of magic and relentless determination and desire. An incredible journey has come to an end but it will never be forgotten.”

Sports Minister Stuart Andrew added: “Thank you to all the Lionesses and for inspiring us all with such a fantastic World Cup run. With their passion and performances they showed us the power of dreaming big and believing in oneself.

“It just wasn’t to be tonight, but the entire country has loved every moment of the journey and we are all proud of all what they have achieved on and off the field in such a short space of time.”

England Captain Millie Bright says England will 'bounce back'

Captain Millie Bright told ITV: “It’s hard, but it’s football. It can go either way. They’re a fantastic team.

“First half wasn’t our best, second half we had chances – we hit the bar. Congrats to them but this is the hard part of football.

“A lot of emotion (right now) but I’m really proud of the team. To come this far, to play in the World Cup final, not many get to do that.

“This is not it for us, we’ll bounce back.”
