NORTH-EAST drivers are the safest in the UK when it comes to accidents caused by distracted driving, a study has shown.

Consumer research company Nimble Fins conducted a study on which areas are the worst in terms of distracted driving.

It found that drivers in the North-East cause the fewest accidents with three per 100,000 residents in which distracted driving, including mobile phone use, was a contributory factor.

The study ranked areas by the size of its local authority and the number of distracted driving accidents in 2017.

Hartlepool and Darlington ranked in the top ten for safest areas of small local authorities, with Hartlepool ranking first and Darlington ranking tenth.

County Durham was ranked third in the safest area with a large local authority.
