A FORMER covert operations police officer has launched a company to help businesses and individuals protect their privacy and information.

Espion TSCM of Stockton has been established by John Mason who has 30 years experience in the military and police service.

The company specialises in electronic sweeping to combat industrial and commercial espionage and to protect individuals against breaches of privacy.

Mr Mason only launched the company a month ago but has already helped one client identify and deactivate a digital recording device believed to have been hidden in a conference room by a member of staff.

He said: “It is surprising how many people under-estimate the threat posed by electronic eavesdropping devices.

With more than 200,000 surveillance devices sold each year in the UK alone, it is a very real threat.

“Many individuals and organisations will be targeted and will have their private information stolen and disseminated.

This will have a detrimental effect on their lives and businesses.”

Mr Mason, who is vetted to Home Office security standards and has received commendations for investigations into serious and organised crime, stressed his company only works to protect clients from privacy invasion.

He said: “We do not provide services to monitor third parties using covert tactics illegally.”

The most at risk include those with strong financial positions, high public profiles and recognised business leaders.

Their solicitors, accountants and partners are also at risk.

Culprits include competitors, estranged spouses or partners, organised crime groups, disaffected members of staff, and pressure groups.
