SURFERS and fishermen clashed on Saltburn pier about a right of way there.
The spat occurred on Thursday of last week when one fisherman was “very abusive”
to surfers, said Sgt Mandy Savory, reporting to Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council on Monday.
“According to independent witnesses, the fisherman was very abusive to surfers,” she said, adding that both surfers and fishermen were at fault.
She added: “There is no legislation about a right of way on the pier. There was some antisocial behaviour with surfers jumping off the end of the pier.
“Fishermen retaliated in a dangerous manner by casting out nets. We can’t say if this was deliberate.”
The sergeant said that PC Stuart Smith, of Saltburn, was investigating.
