A SEAMSTRESS brought up with the philosophy “make do and mend” has opened a shop to cope with demand for her needle skills.

Whether creating a made-to-measure wedding gown or repairing a beloved teddy bear’s arm, Fiona Hawkins believes there is nothing she cannot turn her nimble hand to.

Taught to sew by her mother, she made dresses for her Sindy dolls as a little girl, and now designs life-size versions for real women.

She has recently opened Fiona’s Sewing and Alterations, next to Harper Parade, in Hartburn, Stockton, where she lives Her order book is already overflowing with commissions and she expects requests for prom gowns to flood in after Christmas.

Curtains, roman blinds and soft furnishings are also within her repertoire and, after finding a collection of precious yesteryear patterns, she is keen to tap into another trend – vintage fashion.

Garments which have been languishing for years at the back of a wardrobe can be brought back to life with a modern twist, and women who find it hard finding clothes to fit can have them specially made.

Mrs Hawkins, who has a BSc degree in design and knitwear technology from De Montfort University, Leicester, said: Although I love made-to-measure, I enjoy mending too.

“It’s great when you fix something that people think is beyond repair.”

She relishes the opportunity to create wardrobe staples from fashion disasters.

“I was brought up with the make do and mend mentality, so I can never throw things away,” said the mother-of-three.

“I really enjoy it when people let me take their clothes apart and create something totally new. It’s wonderful to see people fall in love with their own clothes again.”
