PLANS to light up Saltburn as part of the town’s 150th anniversary celebrations are being considered.

Following the success of last year’s Odin’s Glow light spectacular at Roseberry Topping, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has started work on plans to create a similar event in Saltburn.

Coun Sheelagh Clarke, the cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “This is very much in the planning stage at the moment, but we have to try and get the funding for it. The risk is that we want to do this, but we can’t get the funding, so we are looking at ways of doing that now.

“We are looking at something similar to Odin’s Glow if we can get funding for it in the current economic climate.

Regardless of that, there are still funding streams available. There might not be as many of them, but they are still there.”

Odin’s Glow was hailed a great success, with more than 8,000 people descending on Newton under Roseberry, over four days, to witness Roseberry Topping illuminated in stunning style.

The village also played a pivotal part in the display as visitors were taken on a journey of discovery through a wide range of art installations hidden about the village, which was cut off to traffic throughout the event.

The proposed display could form part of the celebrations being planned for the town by Saltburn 150. The group, which is made up of a variety of different organisations, is working on staging events throughout next year, especially focusing on August, the anniversary of when the first train from Darlington arrived at the seaside town in 1861.

Chairman Philip Thomson, of Saltburn Community and Arts Association, said: “We are trying encourage individuals and groups to participate in organising the event so that we can have a comprehensive event to celebrate the 150th anniversary.

“We are hoping to have everything in place in two months’ time so that we can have a full programme of events throughout the year.”

The group is also looking for someone to design a logo to mark the celebrations.

The next meeting of the co-ordinating group will be held in the community hall, Windsor Road, at 7.30pm on Wednesday. All are welcome, particularly representatives of groups which are not yet involved.
