A CHARITY walk will drive home the importance of upland farming while raising funds for the Farm Crisis Network.

More than 80 have already signed up for the Tenant Farmers’ Association walk in Upper Wharfedale.

Stephen Wyrill, national vice-chairman who farms in Wenselydale, said the TFA had “grave concerns” about the future of farming in the hills.

It not only creates the landscape that attracts visitors, but is the first step in the production of high-quality beef and lamb.

Mr Wyrill said one major threat was the low prices farmers received.

He said: “We need good prices for producing high-quality food in the uplands.”

An ombudsman was needed to reduce inflated retail margins and share the cake more fairly between producers, processors and retailers.

Mr Wyrill said: “A major concern is Government policy aimed at heavily reducing stock numbers, which will impact upon profitability and future sustainability.”

“It is a sad fact that a lot of young people have left the Dales in search of making a viable living elsewhere – these are the very people we should be encouraging to stay farming for the future.”

FCN supports farming families through difficult times and the TFA works closely with it.

The walk is at Buckden, Upper Wharfedale, on Saturday, May 22.

Places are available on 0118-930-6130 or email membership@tfa.org.uk.
