FUTURE archaeologists will be able to dig into the past when a new course is launched in the autumn.

Prior Pursglove College, in Guisborough, is the only college in the area to offer students the chance to study A-level archaeology from September.

After the recent discovery of a hoard of Saxon jewellery near Loftus, archaeology is becoming an increasingly popular subject.

The course has been welcomed by experts, including Robin Daniels, archaeology officer from Tees Archaeology, and Steve Sherlock, the archaeologist who uncovered more than 100 graves containing treasures such as ancient weapons and jewellery at the excavation site near Loftus.

Mr Sherlock said: “The students will find that archaeology is a stimulating mix that blends an interest in the past with the practice of digging in the ground and the application of some of the most recent scientific techniques.

“Clearly, there is a range of different skills and scientific disciplines involved in studying archaeology.”

The course will be led by archaeologist Kendra Quinn, who was involved in the study of the Saxon findings, and Heather Lindsay.

Students will have the opportunity to investigate European pre-history along with learning the techniques of an archaeologist.

Those interested in the course should contact the college on 01287-280800 for more details.
