A NORTH Yorkshire deer farm has become the first in the country to invest in a Roundhouse livestock building.

The revolutionary design was invented and developed by Geoff Simpson and John Allinson of S & A Fabrications of Barnard Castle.

It has created a huge stir in the industry with its healthy environment for livestock and ease of handling and management for farmers.

Now, Holme Farmed Venison of Thorpe Underwood, near Green Hammerton, has invested in one for its deer.

The design features a circular roof and no interior or external walls, so animals can maintain their herd instinct by living in groups in pens. The result is a calm, stress-free environment.

Nigel Sampson, of Holme Farmed Venison, said: “Deer are natural herd animals and whether they are farmed or are out in the wild, they never lose this instinct.

“They love to form close family groups and are at their happiest when they can see everything around them.

“We’ve seen a definite change since they’ve gone into the Roundhouse – their behaviour is so relaxed and content. It really mirrors their habits out at pasture in the summer months.

Mr Sampson farms his red deer naturally.

They are reared on the farm’s grass pastures in summer and now in the Roundhouse in winter, guaranteeing a beautifully flavoured, lean and tender red meat.

His award winning company has an online shopping facility at www.hfv.co.uk and offers a door to door delivery service nationwide.

Mr Simpson and Mr Allinson have established Roundhouse Building Solutions as a separate company.
