PETER Kendall, president of the National Farmers’ Union, will address the organisation’s fourth annual Northern Dairy Conference on Tuesday.

Other speakers include John Giles from Promar International and Ian Potter, dairy quota trader.

The last 12 months have proved tumultuous for most dairy farmers with falling farmgate prices, falling farmer numbers and the collapse of Dairy Farmers of Britain.

The fallout of the DFB debacle is still being felt with some producers still having to survive on temporary contracts and the impact of imports, particularly in the cheese market, has had a depressing effect on milk prices.

Mr Kendall will emphasise the priority being given to achieving better prospects right across the sector. He will also update farmers on the NFU’s Milk Contracts Campaign launched in September, which is calling for fairer and more transparent contracts that deliver greater certainty to the way milk prices are determined.

The conference is at the Rendezvous Hotel, Skipton, from 11am to 1pm and includes lunch. Attendance is free, but places must be booked on 01904-451550.
