Ripon Guardians. A letter was read from the Mayor of Ripon (Mr Metcalfe) asking that he be allowed to give the annual treat to the inmates of the Workhouse on January 5th. It was resolved that the requisite leave be given.
From this newspaper 50 years ago. – As part of a national campaign to induce householders to obtain a letter box that complies with official size and design, Mr S Kirby, the Northallerton postmaster, has arranged a display in the post office of the types of letter boxes which are acceptable to the authorities.
From this newspaper 25 years ago. – A short discussion at Thirsk Town Council on Monday as to whether members should accept an invitation from the County Emergency Officer to attend a Civil Defence course, fizzled out rather abruptly after Coun Jack Brannon was asked if he would like to go. Coun Brannon retorted: “I have seen a hydrogen bomb explosion, and it would be a waste of time”.
