HARD-WORKING students were given a spectacular reward for their endeavours – as an RAF helicopter paid a flying visit.

The Chinook swooped down to thrill youngsters at Northallerton College, landing briefly on the playing fields before returning to RAF Leeming, from where its crew was then due to head for Afghanistan.

The fly-past was arranged for dozens of students from years ten and 11 who had performed well academically and shown an excellent attitude to college life over the past half-term.

Flight Lieutenant David Deighton, of 27 Squadron RAF Odiham, agreed to pilot the Chinook on its special visit and he will return to the college to discuss careers in the forces with students upon his return from Afghanistan.

College students were joined by their counterparts from the Dales School, several sixth-formers and members of staff in wishing the crew well as it flew back to base.

Assistant Principal Trevor Starkey said: "We wanted to reward our students for their commitment and achievements, and we were delighted when this opportunity arose.

"It was fitting that the event took place just after our students had been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day and the sacrifices that continue to be made.

"Many students have strong links to RAF Leeming and we are in a federation with Risedale Sports and Community College at Catterick, so this was a very special occasion."
