The summer dog ban on parts of East Cleveland’s beaches is almost over, freeing up areas that have been off-limits for months.
The seasonal ban on designated parts of Saltburn and Redcar beaches ends on September 30, reopening them to dog walkers for autumn and winter.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has confirmed the annual exclusion period remains unchanged, despite recent confusion over the rules, and will end as scheduled next week.
The ban runs from May 1 to September 30 each year before being lifted for the colder months.
The restricted section runs from the western corner of Regent Cinema to the Esplanade and Graffernberg Street on Redcar beach, and between Hazelgrove and Saltburn Pier.
Those who fail to comply with the rules risk being fined up to £1,000 if prosecuted.
A spokesperson for Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council said: "There have been no recent changes to the rules relating to dogs on Saltburn beach.
"The seasonal dog exclusion remains unchanged and continues to be applied annually between 1 May and 30 September, on designated areas of Redcar and Saltburn beach.
"The restriction remains in force until September 30 2026. From October 1 2026, dogs will once again be permitted in these areas until May 1 2027."
The arrangement has governed the coastline for decades, and the council shows no sign of changing it despite annual confusion over where dogs are allowed.
The seasonal ban was introduced under council byelaws in 1991 and has remained in place for about 35 years.
The rules were later folded into the borough’s Public Spaces Protection Order, which came into force in 2016.
With the busy summer season drawing to a close, dog owners will once again be able to enjoy longer walks along the coastline during the quieter autumn and winter months.
