One of Richmond’s most popular walking routes has been closed after rocks tumbled from the area around Richmond Castle.
Visitors have been told to avoid the affected section of the Castle Walk after a large amount of rock fell onto it overnight.
In a statement on Richmond Castle’s social media last night (September 1), a spokesperson said: “We are aware of rockfall from the castle area onto the nearby Castle Walk which occurred overnight.
“The affected area has been temporarily closed for everyone’s safety.
"We ask visitors to please respect the barriers and signage and not attempt to access the affected section of the path.”
The statement said work was underway with the relevant authorities to assess the damage and decide when the route could safely reopen.
The Castle Walk runs around historic Richmond Castle and overlooks the River Swale.
The footpath draws residents and visitors with panoramic views of the river valley and town and links several popular trails around Richmond.
Richmond Castle is one of England’s oldest Norman stone fortresses.
The Castle Walk has long been popular with walkers and sightseers because it offers superb views of the town and river.
The affected stretch will remain closed until safety inspections are complete.
A spokesperson said: “We are working with the relevant authorities and will provide further updates once we know when it is safe for the path to reopen.
“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
No injuries have been reported.
