A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after officers traced his vehicle from County Durham to North Yorkshire.
A Durham Police spokesperson said: "The victim called police reporting the offence last night (Tuesday, August 13).
"The suspect is believed to have travelled to the victim’s address having met each other online that day.
"He left the victim's address just before 7pm in a car and was said to be travelling south.
"Observations were passed to North Yorkshire Police who spotted the vehicle as it headed into their area and pulled the driver over."
A 55-year-old man was arrested at the roadside on suspicion of rape.
The vehicle he was travelling in was also recovered for examination.
The man remains in custody and will be interviewed later today (Wednesday).
