Residents of Northallerton have been left in shock after a man was rushed to hospital after appearing to be stabbed with a needle.
Emergency services swarmed Zetland Street in yesterday (July 2) just before 2.30pm following reports of a 'stabbing' with a needle and swiftly erected a cordon.
A man was taken to hospital following the alleged attack and a 57-year-old man was subsequently arrested.
The street itself today (July 3) was still and quiet after the cordon was dismantled and a lone police car remained outside Betterdaze record shop.
One witness, Irena Paramonova, who works at Master Tailor just up the road, said: “We have never seen anything like this - it was a big shock because ambulances and police arrived so quickly from both sides.
“We don't know how the man is doing who was taken to hospital - we may find out more later.
“He is really nice. I am surprised something like this has happened - especially to him.”
Fellow shop workers around the street say it’s “rare” to see anything like this. “You never really get any trouble around here,” added another.
Meanwhile, passers by on Northallerton High Street say they did not hear anything at the time but have been left “shocked” at discovering the nature of the incident online.
One couple walking along Zetland Street described their reaction as “surprise” and “dismay” after they only heard about it this morning.
A market retailer who was setting up shop for the day said he had “never heard of anyone be stabbed in Northallerton”.
He added: “It all comes as a bit of a shock.”
Pictures taken of the scene yesterday showed multiple officers and police vehicles stationed across the road, blocking off a large section of the street.
A statement from North Yorkshire Police yesterday said: "At just before 2.30pm today (Tuesday 02 July 2024) we received a report that a person had been stabbed with a needle on Zetland Street in Northallerton.
"Officers attended and a 57-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.
