Fire crews were called to several deliberate bin fires which ‘ruined’ a picturesque promenade.

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed they were called to tackle the incident in Saltburn in the early hours of Friday morning (June 21).

They believe the act had been carried out “deliberately” and called it a “reckless act of antisocial behaviour.”

They said the incident has prevented firefighters from attending potentially more serious emergencies.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “In the early hours of (21/06) crews from Saltburn and Skelton Fire Stations were dispatched to extinguish multiple bin fires which were alight along Saltburn’s iconic promenade.

“Firefighters used two jets to extinguish the flames in the wooden bins, which were believed to have been set deliberately.

“This reckless act of anti-social behaviour not only tied up our firefighters and prevented them from attending emergencies where lives could have been at risk but also ruined one of the most picturesque views in the North East.

“We take deliberate fire setting very seriously and work closely with our partners to keep our communities safe.
