Hundreds of people turned up at South Park in Darlington to take part in the Race for Life.

The annual fundraising event for Cancer Research UK took place around a circuit in South Park.

There were cars parked in all the streets around the park as well as on the roadside as people tried to minimise their walk to the start line.

It is hoped that thousands of pounds will have been raised to help scientists trying to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

The commentator at the event, who did a fantastic job getting everybody ready, dedicated the race to Viv Pow, from Middleton Tyas near Darlington. A dedicated campaigner, she died recently after her own inspirational 12-year fight against cancer.

She said: "We are all here for one shared mission. Life really is worth racing for.

"Today we would like to dedicate to Viv Pow. She was a fantastic fundraiser and advocate.

"She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012. She raised over £45,000 for research.

"She embarked on an extraordinary campaign and she encouraged everybody to live life to the full.

"We would like to give our love to her husband. Today we race for life for Viv."
