Great care is not all about fancy facilities. New operator Adore Care Homes does more than that.

It is just over two months since the £11m development of The DurhamGate care home opened its doors following successful registration with the Care Quality Commission. On entering the premises many have been taken aback at how plush the property is and would be forgiven for thinking that despite fancy furniture and a host of features, the actual care would be the same as any other care home. The operator, Adore Care Homes is keen to dispel that myth.

Andrew Long, one of the founders of Adore and working shareholder has over 25 years experience in the industry and says that “care is about people - residents, relatives and staff”.

He explains: “A care home can have all the lovely facilities in the world but if the people running it don’t have a genuine passion for care and embedding a culture of high standards with rigorous quality control, they will never be a truly outstanding provider.”

The company invested heavily in its’ new staff team, providing three weeks of class and practical based induction training. The new staff team were handpicked from hundreds of applicants. DurhamGate General Manager, Karen Johnson added: “We have selected our care team not just based on experience but also attitude and behaviour.

"Our assessment days brought people together so that we could see how they interacted and how they expressed their personal values.”

Adding: “It was really important to me as Registered Manager to determine how genuine people care for the work they do and the elderly people we look after.”

The company has a different approach than most to care. It is already well ahead in technology with its’ owners having used the acclaimed Person Centred Software (PCS) system for several years and an online medication management system underpinned by Boots.

Karen adds: “Most care homes have one manager and one deputy. We have two deputy managers and I am already recruiting for an Assistant General Manager who will focus on care planning and audit control so that we can ensure we achieve the high standards we want.”

The company also has a different approach to fees and service. The service is based on an all inclusive price policy. Samantha Holden, Front of House Manager said: “We charge one single fixed fee for all residents, irrespective of whether they pay for their own care or are partly supported by the Council and we do not charge billable extras so things like newspapers, hairdressing, chiropody, trips out, glasses of wine or even relatives having a meal with their loved one, is all included!”

Samantha went on to say: “We already have a lovely group of residents building the community at DurhamGate, taking advantage of our founders fee offer”
