Barclays will pull down the shutters on another two bank branches in the region this week.

The banking giant has already closed 11 locations across the North East since April, with the two closures this week among six more planned by the end of the year.

Branches in Redcar, Teesside and Middleton in Teesdale, County Durham will both serve their final customers this week.

The Redcar branch on Station Road will close on Wednesday (November 15). The company said fewer than 10 of its customers use the branch exclusively to do their banking.

It means the nearest Barclays will be in the Cleveland Centre in Middlesbrough.

It will be followed with the closure of its Middleton in Teesdale branch on Market Place on Friday (November 17). Barclays says only 19 customers use the branch regularly as the only way to bank.

The closures come as banks continue to push forward with the move to online banking. The number of people using in-person services has been falling for years as people switch to digital.

Twenty-three branches across the North East and North Yorkshire have shut down so far this year leaving many customers without a local store.

Another ten have been earmarked for closure by various bank brands with the final withdrawals to be made in the coming months.

Some areas have seen several branches close within months including Whitley Bay in North Tyneside where four sites have shut.

Barclays has announced the most closures and left the whole of Wensleydale without any bank branches when its Leyburn and Bedale sites shut within a fortnight.

Here are all of the North East banks which have closed so far this year, and those set to close in the coming months (as of November 12, 2023):
