The County Durham Care Academy supports people of all ages to start a fulfilling career in Care.

Care workers in County Durham support some of our most vulnerable residents. For many, like Jamie, the inspiration to become a care worker came from caring for people in their own families.

Jamie was raised by his grandparents and at 16 wanted to become a police officer, but when his grandad got cancer he became his full time carer instead. It inspired him so much that two years later, after his grandad died, he decided to pursue a career in care.

With support from the County Durham Care Academy, Jamie was able to do some training and get a rewarding job caring for people in their own homes.

“It’s a big responsibility but I really love my job because those I look after are all lovely people. You really get used to being with them, and they become like your family after a while,” he says. “A lot of the clients live by themselves, so it makes their day when I arrive, and I love that feeling of putting something back into society.”
